i really wanted to make this costume and William was kind enough to let me dress him up. I really like how it turned out. It was a huge hit.
Lots of fun to make and really quite easy to do. the most time consuming part was the hair and beard. I got some fat yarn so I wouldn't have to make the dreads. I meant to go back and add beads to 2 strands in the front, but it didn't happen. I sewed the yarn to the edge of a piece of hemmed fabric. I added the leather string with beads to the top. The beard is braided yarn with beads, glued on with eyelash glue. it was very well attached and didn't come off until he wanted it off. I used a white dress shirt under a dark dress shirt that I cut the sleeves and collar off of and made into a vest. (both from Jon's closet) For the belt I used a yard of white fabric that I ripped length wise into 4 equal pieces and sewed the short ends together to make a really long piece. I wanted to add red lines with a marker but that didn't happen either. I cut strips brown material to tie around his wrists. I made one ring with a button and a gem with elastic jewelry cord strung through the holes, but it was a pain to do so we only did one. Walmart had some huge black rings on clearance so we grabbed 2 and called it good. We got a sword set that came with an eye patch and an earring. I put lots of back eyeliner on and smudged it well and added a mustache. Then I put bronzing powder all over his face. I would have liked to do the pants and boots but it was great the way it was and the boots would have been a lot of work as would the hat he wore, so we skipped those.
Emilee loves to have her face painted so we did this neat idea from a kit from Walmart. It turned out really good too.
David wore the cape I made him years ago and got this mask to scare everyone. He had black around his eyes and looked just like the eveil emperor on Star wars with the mask off. Should have gotten a picture of that. the cape is so short on him now. i need to add fabric or make him a new one.
Poor Claire, she went back and forth on what she would be but they all involved this cape/dress things we got in a box from Aunt S. When we got dressed to go she no longer liked it. The back thing was too heavy and the sleeves too puffy. We got to town and the dress came off and she was just a regular girl dressed in black. Maybe they thought she was a goth girl? See how happy she is in this picture?
The earring. A last minute addition. Such a fun evening. We walked around Webberville with friends from church. Next year I am making the mad hatter and David has volunteered to wear that. I just realized William may not be here next year to dress up. Sniff. At least he said I made up for depriving him all those years with this costume. Yes!
Have to add this, I was going to make Jude a Larry Boy costume. He loves to watch "Bob a Warry" aka Veggie Tales. But I didn't have much of the material I needed to get 'er done. I made him a George, Monkey costume instead. I made a hooded pullover out of brown fleece, which I had to creatively lay out to make it work on what I had. Then I made a pr of brown knit pants, which would have ideally been made from fleece as well, but I had none left. I added huge ears to the hood with pink inners. he looked like a mouse. So the ears came off and I cut them much smaller and lowered them. He could still be a mouse, but the kids say he's a hybrid. He really likes it and wore it so much it is in the laundry already. I forgot to make a tail. He fell asleep at like 5 pm so he completely missed the walk around town, which was ok. It wasn't too chilly but it was a lot of walking and I had enough trouble lugging my fat self around without carrying him or pushing a stroller, which I don't know if I would have thought to bring. Pictures of his monkey /mouse coming soon.
